Icing Hey Sailor Boy Vs Deborah Lippmann Across the Universe
Hello Beauties,
Here I introduce you Icing Hey Sailor Boy on the left as a possible dupe to one of the most coveted polish, Deborah Lippman Across the Universe on the right.
How close do they compare? Let's check it out...
On the first coat, you can immediately notice that Hey Sailor Boy has a more pigmented jelly base, whereas Across the Universe looks sheer, patchy, and streaky.
Hey Sailor Boy looks done with 2 coats. Whereas Across the Universe still looks patchy on the second.
Across the Universe need at least 3 coats in order to look opaque. Hey Sailor Boy only needs two.
The difference is that the jelly base for Hey Sailor Boy looks bluer and because it more saturated than Across the Universe, I feel that it kinda mutes the glitters underneath it. Hey Sailor boy has less larger glitter but more smaller glitters. Across the Universe is the other way around, more larger glitters and less small glitters. The jelly base on Across the Universe is a much darker blue but because it is sheerer, it allows the glitters to really shine through.
Personally, I still prefer Across the Universe because the glitters look more vibrant and eye-catching. Hey Sailor Boy is still a good cheaper alternative if you can't justify the price of Across the Universe. $4.50 versus $19.00. They are definitely not spot on dupes and there is a huge difference in price, but a small difference in the swatches.
Regardless of the price, which one do you think actually looks prettier?

I've been itching to get my hands on Across the Universe so Hey Sailor Boy looks like a must-have! I love the darker, more sheer jelly blue base of AtU, but I also love the brighter blue glitter in Hey Sailor Boy...can't choose a favorite!
ReplyDeletegreat post! =D
True...they are both still pretty in their own way :)
DeleteAcross the Universe would be my pick - but they are very close!
ReplyDeleteYes they are. I like ATU better too.
DeleteI actually think Icing's Hey Sailor Boy is much prettier. DL's Across the Universe looks nice, but not as nice as Hey Sailor Boy to me. Plus I can't justify paying the price that DL's go for.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I just bought Icing's Epic Winning on eBay and even though I don't love glitters - that one is super pretty and I can see doing an accent finger with it.
DeleteWOW I just looked up the swatch of Epic and that is like a glitter bomb. I hope you have fun with it
DeleteTo be honest, I love them both, yet to try either but I know that at least one of them needs to get into my life! I had no idea there was such a good dupe out there!
ReplyDeleteI've been seeing a few cheaper alternatives recently. I'm glad the drugstore brands are keeping up with the high-end brands.
DeleteBoth look gorgeous but I would probably end up buying Hey Sailor Boy over Across the Universe because its more opaque. I hate having to do a bunch of coats.
ReplyDeleteWell 3 coats isn't too bad, in my opinion, when you end up with polishes as pretty as these.
DeleteI've had my eye on Across the Universe for ages! I actually think Hey Sailor Boy is prettier but that's just because I like blue better than green. I do like how most of the glitter in Across The Universe is on the surface. Some of the HSB glitter sunk a little. I think they're both great. xx
ReplyDeleteThe base of HSB is a bit more saturated, had it been less I think the glitters would show up better.
DeleteThis post tells me I definitely need more blue nail polish in my life x
ReplyDeleteI love blues on my nails. It's one of my favorite nail color.
DeleteThere's something about deborah lippmann nail polishees thtat drives me absolutely insane. How freaking gorgeous is that!!!

I totally agree with you. There something about the DL polishes that looks more appealing.
